Cupping and the Benefits Attributed to It

Question

What is cupping, what has been reported about it, and what therapeutic benefits are attributed to it?

Answer

Cupping is part of Prophetic medicine and is used to treat many illnesses and health problems. It works by drawing a quantity of blood from the affected area towards the skin using suction cups, then removing this impure blood from the body, separating it from the circulation and so relieving pain and inflammation in the affected area.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, taught that cupping is an important method of healing and treatment. Abu Dawud reported: “No one complained to the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, of a pain… except that he said: Get cupped.” Among the benefits attributed to cupping are that it treats general headaches, relieves migraine and clears nicotine deposits from smoking, eliminates allergies and sinus inflammation, treats eye conditions and inflammation and infections of the middle and inner ear, and protects against circulatory disorders.

Cupping is also said to stimulate memory, increase concentration and energy, relieve mental and nervous disorders and bring calm and rest to the nerves. It is said to treat dental problems and nerve inflammation, to protect against high blood pressure, hemiplegia and vaginal bleeding, and to relieve psychological stress, fatigue, insomnia and exhaustion. It improves blood flow through the brain, increasing concentration and energy, and is said to protect against cancer and to prevent rheumatism, joint disease and paralysis.

Cupping stimulates both the lymphatic and blood circulation, relieves pressure on the nerves and triggers reflex responses in the body. This helps the brain pay closer attention to the organs and send the necessary signals to the body's systems to respond appropriately. It is said to clear the effects of toxins and harmful medicines from the body, strengthen immunity and protect against serious illness.

Cupping helps remove impure blood containing microbes and germs, stimulates the body's organs and functions and increases the delivery of oxygen to the organs concerned. It also stimulates the thyroid gland and the sebaceous glands of the skin, helping the body to rid itself of harmful substances.
