In the Presence of Silence
A journey through the sea of meaning and the mirror of existence
“In the Presence of Silence” by Dr Yousef Ahmad Al-Maiari, published by Al-Maktaba Al-Asriya in Sidon, Lebanon.
A Heartbeat Between Two Covers
At the beginning of the story, this book was not a project already printed in the mind, nor a title waiting at the head of its pages. It was a question pressing in the depths of the soul: how can a person regain their balance in a world suffocating in noise, a world that loses its footing with every raised voice?
From there began the search for another space, one not measured by the number of words or bounded by speeches and slogans. It was a space where silence steps forward as a measure for our gaze, an appointed time for thought and a platform on which a person stands before themselves before standing before the world. So the idea of “In the Presence of Silence” was born: not as a text arranged into chapters and sections, but as a balance on which the reader may stand at the edge of their own self and see how calm can mend what time has damaged and what noise has scattered.
This book was not the fruit of passing enthusiasm or a single moment of inspiration. It took some eight years of labour and scrutiny, tracing the currents of meaning through the course of life and experience. For long years the pen rose and fell, writing one page and erasing another, replacing one word with another, raising one sentence only to strike out the next, until the weak words fell away and only what deserved its place in strong, precise language remained.

This book was not shaped in haste, nor built on quick phrasing and loose construction. It was built as fortresses are built: stone upon stone, meaning upon meaning, one expression completing another, until it came to rest on four pillars: patience to steady it, knowledge to illuminate it, language to carry it and a conscience that weighs every sentence before it takes its place.
“In the Presence of Silence” does not seek a place for itself among the titles on the shelf, nor to rival the glory of this poet or that writer. It hopes only to stand where language does its true work: guiding thought, correcting our way of seeing and building a bridge between the inner world and the scenes of reality. That is why it draws on the strongest tools language has: eloquent construction, rigorous structure, deep comparison and interwoven imagery that seeks no ornament but fights on the side of meaning, bringing out its strength and majesty.
An inner rhythm runs through this book with great control. In it you hear echoes of the rhymed prose of classical Arabic, but in new clothing that rejects artifice and lets meaning rise above any verbal decoration not supported by thought. The reader feels they are not merely receiving a sentence, but crossing a bridge with each word, from the bank of distraction to the bank of focus, from scattered attention to deep and disciplined reflection.
It is no wonder that, after these years of work, the book stands closer to a monument of language than to a volume left on a lower shelf. It speaks to a person's mind, converses with their heart, addresses their historical memory and calls upon what they have learned from the great dictionaries and sources of classical Arabic eloquence. Yet for all that, it makes no claim to perfection. It invites the reader to continue the journey: a journey of silence that preserves the dignity of the word, of dialogue undamaged by fruitless argument, and of reading that refuses to skim the lines but seeks an honest encounter with oneself and the world around. This is the author's word to whoever opens this book: do not read it as you read hurried pages. Enter with it into the presence of silence, and let your thoughts climb as one climbs a mountain, step after step, until you reach the summit where things are seen as they should be, not as you were made to see them.
These pages are not the end of a road, but the key to another beginning. I gathered in them what silence inspired in my heart, not to become a voice that rises and then fades, nor to wear them as an ornament in gatherings of empty claims, but to offer an open pledge, a testament of insight and a key for anyone who wishes to open the door of their soul onto a wider light. May they breathe the meanings of truth more deeply, find in silence a ladder to the open sky of knowledge, and feel in every letter a pulse of wisdom flowing through the arteries of thought, so that the reader sees beyond the word and glimpses between its lines a radiance that sings with the breath of light.
These pages are a breeze of thought and awareness, an echo of light moving between stillness and radiance. They refresh the heart, nurture calm within it and reveal the hidden places of beauty that the eye cannot see but the heart can feel and the mind can perceive. With every sentence, the reader walks as if through a garden of light, arranging meanings like flowers in a breeze of stillness and dignity.
I wrote this book as a journey with the self before it was a journey with the pen: a journey in which I sat with my silence, listened to the whisper of my times and conversed with the echo of my days. I found no truer measure than silence, no fairer judge and no wider school. It is the mirror that reveals what is hidden, the ground where thought grows and the door that leads to knowledge, showing the soul the secret of its slumber and the seeds of its light. I did not set out to list ordered ideas or collect scattered maxims. I wanted to offer an experience I have lived, a truth I have touched and a key I believe in. I hand you that key, dear reader. Use it well and it will open new doors for you; leave it by the roadside and it remains useless iron. A book cannot work for you or think in your place. It is a travelling companion, a mirror for reflection and a scale on which to weigh your steps.
I know that an honest word may provoke argument, spark debate and tear away veils that falsehood once kept in place. It may shake thrones built on illusion and greed. Wherever truth speaks, the palaces of falsehood tremble and the hearts of those who hate the light are troubled. Yet this is its rightful place and its highest mission: to stir thought from its slumber, wake minds from their heedlessness and rouse consciences from the stupor of habit and the comfort of conformity.
A word that moves no feeling, raises no question and leaves no trace is nothing but a cold breath in the air of heedlessness. And a silence that grows no insight and yields no wisdom is the stillness of death in the clothing of life: calm on the surface, with lifeless spirits beneath. Blessed is the word that tells the truth even when it hurts, and the silence that grows light even when it saddens. For in the shaking of thought, truths are born, and in the stillness of wisdom, the light of existence shines.
Dear reader, I do not ask you to follow blindly or repeat in silence. I invite you to a dialogue that awakens your inner balance and kindles in you the light of insight, whose call only pure hearts can hear. This book is not a minaret from which opinions are recited, nor a pulpit from which convictions are dictated. It is a mirror that shows each reader what they keep hidden, if only they look into it honestly. Keep and act on what agrees with you, for it is the growth of your own wisdom; and debate what does not, with insight and a steady mind. Dialogue is the breath of thought and the spirit of life.
The aim of this path is not to make you a shadow of me, but to give back the voice that the voices of the crowd have taken from you, and to revive the thoughts that the clamour of life has dulled, until you return to yourself as clear as you were created and see truth through your own heart rather than through the lens of others. If this path touches your heart with warmth, raises a question in you or opens a door into your depths, then it has done what I hoped. A word that kindles no thought does not deserve to be written, and a thought that shakes no stillness is no thought at all.
The word is an ember that kindles; silence is a spring that leads somewhere. In the harmony between them, insight is born, guiding hearts and baptising minds. This book is not pages to be read, but a journey to be lived. Its words stir the rubble in a person's depths and remind them that knowledge is never given without effort and can only be drawn out through reflection and patience. So shake off the dust of silence, open the window of your soul onto a brighter light, and listen to the word as it moves through the kingdoms of thought like a breeze praising in the light. In the word there is life, in silence there is radiance, and between them a new person rises on the ladder of wisdom towards a light that never fades. Success comes from God, and in Him we place our trust. And these are my final words to you, in verse rather than prose… In the Presence of Silence:
My silence is my weapon in this world, and my banner;in it the truth unveils its face, steadfast and sure.
Upon the letters I have woven wisdomthat shines like light, chanting a promise to the seeing heart.
Whoever comes to read what I have writtenwill find meanings bursting forth, and wake ablaze.
These words came to me out of my stillness,a breath that lights the soul and steadies the mind.
With a physician's wisdom in their measure,I gave words life, precise as healing medicine.
With a writer's quill I traced my experiences,so hearts may draw from them the blazing stars.
In every line there is strength and firm foundationthat shakes the age and wakes glory to greater glory.
In my silence I sank into an ocean of knowledgeand saw, in its depths, a meaning like no other.
For silence is life's inheritance and its secret, standing firm as the ages pass.
And through my pen, maturity remains a lighthousethat guides the mind and shows the rightful way.
Here you take your first step into meaning, not as a follower or one led, but as a witness to yourself and a questioner of your own vision. If you find a mirror in these words, look into it long. If you find a path, walk it with awareness. Wisdom does not give itself to those who rush it, but to those who walk towards it with a wakeful heart.
